Biographical sketch: John dough James ( 1600- 1881) was t h e % on of Levi and Rachel Hough James. He married Abby Bailey i n 1825 and t h e i r c h i l d r e n were Ellen Rachel ( b. 1826), Gertrude V. ( b. 1828), Francis B. ( b. 1831), and John Henry ( 1834- 1898). John Henry James married H a r r i e t Lynch i n 1863 and t h e i r c h i l d r e n included John Hough James ( 1866- 1950). For a d d i t i o n a l information see: Ophia D. Scope and content: The James Family Papers c o n s i s t of 19 vol. umes and occupy two cubic f e e t of s h e l f space. The papers date from 1850 through 1904 and a r e arranged c h r o n o l o g i c a l l y i n t o four s e r i e s . The John Hough James s e r i e s contains f i v e letter-press boolcs of correspondence, Feb. 11, 1850- April 17, 1858, and one l e t t e r p r e s s book of miscellaneous h i s t o r i c a l and p o l i t i c a l w r i t i n g s , ca. 1852- 1664. The Urbana and Champaign Mutual Insurance Company, Urbana, Ohio, s e r i e s c o n s i s t s of one l e t t e r - press book of correspondence by t h e s e c r e t a r y , E. Glenn, Aug. 13, 1852- March 14, 1859. The John Henry James s e r i e s includes el- even letter press books of correspon-dence Sept. 21, 1863- Jan. 21, 1884; and July 6, 1886- March 18, 1901. The l e t t e r book f o r Jan. 1884- July 1886 was not received w i t h t h e c o l l e c t i o n . When John Henry James died September 23, 1898 h i s son John Hough James c a r r i e d on the business and correspondence. The John Hough James papers t h e r e f o r e begin during 1898. The John liough Jaines s e r i e s contains one l e t t e r press book of correspondence, March 1901- April 13, 1904 which completes t h e c o l l e c t i o n .
