COLLECTION SYNOPSIS
Provenance: The Ohio Historical Society acquired the Daniel
Rhodes Hanna papers through the auspices of Don Grogan,
president of the T. W. Grogan Realty Company, as a gift of the
Hanna Building Corporation, Cleveland, Ohio, in April 1960.
Sherrill Dryden- Baird processed the collection in December
1979.

Biographical sketch: Daniel Rhodes Hanna ( 1866- 1921), son of
Marcus Alonso and C. Augustus Hanna, was born and raised in
Cleveland, Ohio. Hanna assumed control of the family business
concerns, including M. A. Hanna and Company, after his father's
death in 1904.
Hanna purchased the Cleveland Leader in 1910 from Medill
McCormick, his brother- in- law and editor and publisher of the
Chicago Tribune. In 1912 he purchased the Cleveland News when
the owner refused to support Theodore Roosevelt. Although not
as politically active as his father, Hanna was one of Roosevelt's
principal financial backers in Ohio during the 1912 presidential
campaign. The editorial policies of the Leader and the N- ews
reflect Hanna's progressive politics.
