Garrett Hayes Coleman Collection Eight cubic feet Preliminary inventory Collection Synopsis Provenance: The Ohio Historical Society acquired the Garrett Hayes Coleman Collection as a gift of Mrs. WiLlialn A. Alexander and Mrs. Paul H. Shaver of Columbus, Ohio, and Mr- Paul H. Cclemar~ of Mill. Valley, California, in June 1955. Keith A. Maneese processed the collection in April 1980, Property rights: The Ohio Historical Society owns the property rights to this collection. Copyrights: Copyrights have - not been dedicated to the public. Consideration of the requirements of copyright is the responsibility of the author and publisher. Access: This collection is open under the rules and regulations of the Ohio Historical Society. Citatlox: Researchers are requested to cite collection name, collec-tion n~- ber and the Ohio Historical Society in all footnote and bibliographic references. Transfer: One- half foot of photographs, keys to photographs, stock certificates, diagrams, blueprints, and other ephemera were trans-ferred to che audiovisual department in April 1980. Biogra2hical sketch: Garrett Hayes ( George) Coleman was born in Maryland on July 18, 1876. He lived in Columbus, Ohio from 1909 until his death on March 14, 1955. Coleman began his association with the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad in 1.895 as a fireman. He was promoted to engineer with the B & 0 in 1899. An engineer's time book ( box 7/ folder 16), however, indicates Col. eman worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad system in 1903. From 1911 until his retirement in 1946 Coleman was a locomotive inspector for the Interstate Commerce Commission. Known as the " I. C. C. Shepherd of Iron Horses," Coleman was in charge of I. C. C. Division 16N, the area bounded by Chillicothe, Columbus, and Parkersburg and Weirton Junction, West Virginia. Coleman was responsible for inspecting over 1200 locomotives, and for issuing " red tags" to engineers. Note to researchers: The manuscript processor identified 245 railroad lines documented within the Coleman collection. Due to the nature of the records. information on a specific line may be found in more than one category in the collection. Records which the processor could not identify with a specific line are con-tained in the general records files. Researchers are advised to check all files when searching a specific line.
