Collection Synopsis
Provenance: The Ohio Historical Society acquired the Columbus
Typographical Union No. 5 records as a gift of the union, through
the auspices of the secretary- treasurer, Erwin J. Gassman, in
October 1966. Mary Stein Higley processed this collection in
April 1978, Kathleen McIntyre Conway processed an addendum to the
collection in February 1985, and Wendy S. Greenwood reprocessed
the entire collection in January 1989.
Property rights: The Ohio Historical Society owns the property
rights to this collection.
Copyrights: The Col~ mbus Typographical Union No. 5 has dedicated
such copyrights as it possesses in this collection to the public.
Consideration of all other copyrights is the responsibility of
the author and publisher.
Access: Boxes 20- 23 are RESTRICTED. Researchers must sign a
Confidentiality Agreement before using boxes 20- 23. Boxes 1- 19
and 24- 36 are open under the rules and regulations of the Ohio
Historical Society.
Citation: Researchers are requested to cite collection name,
collection number, and the Ohio Historical Society in all
footnote and bibliographic references.
Transfer: Printed material was transferred to the library
collections in December 1988.
Chronolosv
1832 The Columbus ~ ypographical Society was established as a
benevolent society.
1850 Columbus printers were reorganized as a protective
society to relieve sick and distressed members.
1852 The National Journeyman Printers ( NJP) was organized at
a convention in Cincinnati; Columbus printers sent two
delegates. Columbus printers requested and were
granted a charter from the NJP. Officers were elected
under provisions of the charter and the original
society was absorbed by the new organization known as
Columbus Typographical Union No. 5.
