COLLECTION SYNOPSIS
Provenance: The Ohio H i s t o r i c a l Society acquired the John Armor
Bingharn Papers through the e s t a t e of h i s daughter, Emma Bingham
of Upper Montclair, New Jersey, in 1941. S h e r r i l l Dryden- Baird
processed the c o l l e c t i o n i n January 1981.

Scope and content: The John Armor Bingham Papers date from 1848
t o 1913 and occupy one- quarter cubic foot. The papers c o n s i s t
of John A. Bingham's l e t t e r s , l e t t e r b o o k , various newspaper
clippings and miscellaneous i t e m s ; and Emma Bingham's d i a r i e s
and letters. The newspaper clippings w e r e photocopied f o r
preservation reasons.
John A. Bingham's l e t t e r s t o h i s family and acquaintances date
from 1857 t o 1886. The letters dated 1857 t o 1869 p a r t i a l l y
document h i s tenure as a U. S. senator from Ohio and include
mention of speeches delivered i n Congress and the [ Johnson]
impeachment question. A l e t t e r of p e t i t i o n conveyed by Bingham
to President Grant dates June 1 9 , 1 8 6 9 , and concerns the replace-ment
of the marshal1 from the southern d i s t r i c t of Ohio. The
letters dated 1875 t o 1877 w e r e w r i t t e n during Bingham's s e r v i c e
as U. S. minister t o Japan and include a d e s c r i p t i o n of l i f e in
Japan and mention of family matters.
The letterbook dated 1879 t o 1883 contains Bingham's copies of
letters sent in h i s o f f i c i a l capacity as U. S. minister t o Japan.
The letterbook is contained in the f i r s t p a r t of the volume
followed by a diary apparently w r i t t e n by Emma Bingham.

The newspaper clippings date from 1857 to 1858 and 1865 t o 1911
and include biographical sketches, obituary n o t i c e s and comments
on Bingham's congressional speeches. The miscellaneous i t e m s
i n c l u d e a quotation by Bingham a g a i n s t the spread of slavery
( 1 8 4 8 ) , a bank r e c e i p t ( 1 8 7 8 ) , and a memorial t o Bingham by the
Harrison County [ Ohio] bar a s s o c i a t i o n ( 1900) .
