unlu H I S T O R Y MSS 131 Albert M. Bleile Papers One cubic foot Standard inventory Collection Synopsis Provenance: The Ohio Historical Society acquired the Albert M. Bleile Papers as a gift from Catherine A. Bleile of Columbus, Ohio, in August 1948 and October 1948. Wolfgang Fleischhauer translated and Peter Lundskow processed the collection in August 1985. Property rights: The Ohio Historical Society owns the property rights to this collection. Copyrights: Catherine A. Bleile has dedicated such copyrights as she possesses in this collection to the public. Consideration of all other copyrights is the responsibility of the author and publisher. Access: This collection is open under the rules and regulations of the Ohio Historical Society. Citation: Researchers are requested to cite collection name, collection number, and the Ohio Historical Society in all foot-note and bibliographic references. Biographical sketch: Albert M. Bleile was born in Columbus, Ohio, in 1856. He attended the Central German school and Central High School in Columbus. In 1877 Bleile earned his medical degree from Starling Medical College at the age of twenty- one. The following year he traveled to Europe for postgraduate study. He studied first in Vienna, and then in Leipzig under Carl Ludwig, the father of modern physiology, and finally in Paris. In 1879 Bleile returned to Columbus to practice medicine and lecture at Starling Medical College. He joined the faculty of the Ohio State University in 1891 where he became a professor of physiology in 1914 and professor emeritus in 1931. He married Flora Krumm of Columbus in 1880 and had two daughters, Catherine and Flora. Albert Bleile died in 1933 at the age of seventy- seven. Sources: Albert M. Bleile Papers date from 1850 to - 1952 and consist of one cubic foot. The papers, arranged chrono-logically, highlight Bleile's years of study and travel in Europe and his early career as a professor of physiology. The material is organized into three series: Family correspondence, personal papers, and related articles. The family correspondence contains three letters from relatives in German to Albert Bleile's father Jacob. The vast majority of the correspondence are weekly news to Bleile's parents from Bleile while he was in Europe. Also there are a few letters from Professor Carl Ludwig to both Bleile and his parents.
