Collection Synopsis
Provenance: The Ohio Historical Society acquired the Thomas D.
Jones Papers as gifts of the following persons: Zarel Jones,
January 26, 1940; William Harvey Jones, February 27, 1947;
Mr. & Mrs. William Basnett, Lancaster, Texas, 1949; Orville F.
Grahame, Worcester, Massachusetts, November 1959; and Robert
Price, Westerville, Ohio, March 1975. Sherrill Dryden- Baird
processed the collection in November 1979,
Property rights: The Ohio Historical Society holds the pro2erty
rights to this collection.
Copyrights: The donors have not dedicated copyrights to the
public. Consideration of therequirements of copyright is the
responsibility of the author and publisher.
Access: This collection is open under the rules and regulations
of the Ohio Historical Society.

collection number and the Ohio Historical Society in all foot-note
and bibliographic references.
Transfer: In 1962, several pamphlets were transferred to the
Library Division. Photographs were transferred to the Audio-visual
Department in 1962 and 1979.
Historical sketch: Thomas D. Jones, renowned sculptor, was born
in Oneida County, New York, on' December 12, 1811. In 1837, the
Jones family moved to Granville, Ohio, where Thomas assisted his
father as a mason and stonecutter.
After 1841 Jones occupied a studio in Cincinnati, Ohio, where he
executed many of his sculptures. His works number about sixty,
including a bust of Henry Clay ( 1844), a bust of General Zachary
Taylor ( 1848), and a bust of the Hon. Reverdy Johnson ( 1876) .
Jones's most famous work, the Lincoln and Soldiers' Memorial,
was unveiled in the State Capitol Building of Ohio in 1871.
Jones married Caroline Louise Bealer in 1867; they were divorced
in 1872. He died on February 27, 1881, and was buried in the
Welsh Hills cemetery near Granville, Ohio.

Scoge and content: The Thomas D. Jones Papers date from 1839-
1972 and occupy one- half cubic foot. The collection is divided
into two series: Thomas D. Jones and Jones family papers. All
items are arranged chronologically within folders. Occasionally,
typed copies of correspondence appear in the collection.
