Provenance: The Dana Family Papers were acquired by the Ohio Historical
Society in 1946. Processing was completed i n January 1979 by Margaret
Smith.

1837- 1838, was transferred to the Library.
Biographical Sketch: Biographical and genealogical informati- on on the
Dana Family and i n t e r r e l a t e d families, may be found in box 1, folder 26.
Additional information on the lineage of the Dana family may be found in
the Dictionary - of American Biography, volume V.
Scope and Content: The one l i n e a r foot of the Dana Family Papers primarily
consist of family correspondence and personal papers, some legal documents
and business correspondence. The span dates are 1817- 1948, with the bulk
of the material from the 1800' s. There is considerable correspondence
from and to Frances Dana Price, Mary B. Dana Dustin, and George Dana.
Included i n the papers of Cyrus Byington, missionary to the Choctoi~ Indians,
are research papers r e l a t i n g to his work on the Choctaw language.
Correspondence of Anselm Tupper Nye, and several other members of the Dana
family, nay be found i n t h i s collection. One folder of material contains
school compositions and essays of Frances Dana Price, and an additional
folder contains s i m i l a r material but the originator of these papers is not
i d e n t i f i e d ( perhaps George Dana). Several references are made i n l e t t e r s
to Marietta College, Ohio University, and Marietta Female Seminary. ( Note:
Newspaper clipping of a speech by C. S. Dana, t h a t appeared in the Marietta
Leader, September 26, 1895, was removed from the collection. This
newspaper has been microfilmed by the Ohio Historical Society.)
