Provenance: The Ohio Historical Society acquired the D. H. Gard
Papers prior to 1939. Kay Weisman processed the collection in
April 1979.

Transfer: Approximately one dozen photographs and lithographs,
and one package of stationery samples were transferred to the
Audiovisual Department. One volume of Ohio Militia Court of
Inquiry Records 1810- 1816 was transferred to the Archives Depart-ment.
Biographical sketches: Daniel Hosmer Gard was born February 24,
1844, near Brown's Mills in Washington County, Ohio. He was a
Western Union telegraph operator, and for twenty years, the
Superintendent of Telegraphy for the Columbus, Hocking Valley &
Toledo Railroad. In later years, he owned a store in Columbus,
selling wallpaper, books, and stationery. He married Ella Rider
in 1868; they had one son, Wordsworth, born in 1876. Gard was
a charter member of the Ohio Archaeological and Historical. Society,
and an autograph collector. He died in 1325.
Hiram Gard, D. H. Gard's father, was born in 1804, in Washington
County, Ohio. He spent his early years in Virginia, but returned
to Palmer township in 1810. He kept the first store at Brown's
Mills from about 1825- 1830, and served as the town's postmaster
for almost twenty years. In 1854, Hiram Gard moved to Vincent,
in Barlow Township, where he also kept store. From about 1857-
1861, he worked as a freight agent for the Marietta & Cincinnati
Railroad at New England in Athens County. He married Attaline
Gage Dunsmoor; they had seven children of whom Daniel was the
sixth.
