and their families. Of note is Joseph Sullivant's A Genealogy and
Family Memorial ( private printing: 1874).
Scope and content: The Sullivant- Starling Collection, dating 1783
to 1911, contains one- half cubic foot of original material gathered
by Andrew Denny Rodgers I11 to document the family of his great,
great grandfather Lucas Sullivant. The collection is arranged in
rough chronological order and consists of correspondence, financial
records, legal documents, survey records, and miscellaneous material.
Rodgers maintained his collection in three- ring binders ( 11 cubic
feet) as listed in the appendix, and many of the original items
contain underscoring or annotations made by him.
The majority of material documents Lucas Sullivant's work as a
surveyor, personal acquisition of land, related business dealings,
and family activities. Early land records include surveys and
correspondence related to surveys in Kentucky and the Virginia
Military District of Ohio. Various deeds, conveyances, indentures,
powers of attorney, patents, warrants, and receipts document his
purchase of land for himself and management of land for other
people. Notable among these are sichard C. Anderson, Charles W.
Byrd, Henry Clay, Jonathan Dayton, J. W. Johnston, Simon Kenton,
Nathaniel Massie, and Duncan McArthur. Later land dealings in
the Franklinton area are recorded in his agreements with the state
to support construction of roads, a court house, and a bridge.
Documents from 1817, however, relate his resistance to a fifteenth
road through his property. Also recorded is Sullivant's donation
of the land for the site of a Presbyterian church in Franklinton
( 1808).
