t r a c e s i t s b e g i n n i n g s t o September 1961 when William Dobbins and
s e v e r a l o t h e r members of T e a m s t e r s Local 413 urped t h e l o c a l ' s
members t o c o n s i d e r d i s a f f i l i a t i o n with t h e I n t e r n a t i o n a l B r o t h e r -
hood of Teamsters b e c a u s e o f a l l e d g e d c o r r u p t i o n and poor r e p r e -
s e n t a t i o n . On O c t o b e r 1 2 , 1 9 6 1 , numerous mercbers of L o c a l 413
r e s i g n e d and founded t h e D r i v e r s ' and Warehousemen's L o c a l 3027
with t h e a i d of AFL o r g a n i z e r s William K i r c h e r , Thomas S t e w a r t ,
and James Lukens. Through a s e r i e s of v i c t o r i e s in r e p r e s e n t a t i c n
e l e c t i o n s c o n t e s t e d with Local 413, Local 3027 t r i p l e d i t s menber-s
h i p and a f f i l i a t e d with t h e AFL- CIO. In 1 9 7 2 , h o w e v e r , Local
3027 ended i t s a f f i l i a t i o n with t h e D r i v e r s ' and Warehousemen's
Union and became t h e United I n d u s t r i a l Workers of North America
of t h e S e a f a r e r s I n t e r n a t i o n a l Union of North America At1 a n t i c ,
G u l f , Lakes and I n l a n d Waters D i s t r i c t AFL- CIO.
