and Aerospace Workers ( I. A. M.) was founded i n 1883 i n A t l a n t a ,
Georgia, as an union o f r a i l r o a d m a c h i n i s t s . Today I. A. M.
members work i n many i n d u s t r i e s , i n c l u d i n g manufacturing, e l e c -
t r o n i c s , c h e m i c a l s , p l a s t i c s , a i r c r a f t and automobile p a r t s ,
atomic energy, b u s i n e s s machines, and t e x t i l e s . The f i r s t
I. A. M. l o c a l o r lodge i n Ohio ( and t h e 55th i n t e r n a t i o n a l l y )
was c h a r t e r e d i n 1897 as Buckeye Lodge 55 of Columbus, now
p a r t of D i s t r i c t 52 of the I. A. M.
I. A. M. d i s t r i c t lodges a r e a s s o c i a t i o n s of I. A. M. l o c a l lodges
i n one of f o u r c a t e g o r i e s : i n d u s t r y , m i l i t a r y hardware, a i r -
c r a f t c o n s t r u c t i o n and r a i l r o a d s . D i s t r i c t 52 was c h a r t e r e d
in 1946 " t o c r e a t e harmony, u n i t y of purpose, c e n t r a l i z a t i o n
of e f f o r t , and c o o p e r a t i o n among Columbus, Ohio, area I. A. M.
lodges i n the metal i n d u s t r y . " In a d d i t i o n t o Lodge 55, s i x
o t h e r lodges a r e p a r t of D i s t r i c t 52. Lodge 427 r e p r e s e n t s
Abex Corporation employees i n W a r y s v i l l e ; Lodge 1038 r e p r e s e n t s
