Collection Synopsis
Provenance: The Ohio Eistorical Society acquired the Thomas T
Taylor Papers 2s a gift of Mrs. Eelen Taylor Steinbarger,
Washinqton, D. C., in July 1962. Kay Weisman processed the
collection in October 1979.
Property rights: The Ohio Historical Society owns the
property rights to this collections.
Copyrights: Hrs. Steinbarger has dedicated such copyrights as
she possesses in these papers to the public. Considera= ion of
all other copyrights is the responsibility of the author and
publisher.
Access: This collection is open under the rules and regulations
of the Ohio Historical Society.

Related materials: The Ohio Historical Society acquired a
positive microfilm of the Taylor Papers (? IIC 17, Rolls 20 and
21), filmed at Emcry University, in 1961. The film includes
Mrs. Steinbarger's erlited ty? escri? ts of Tsylor's letters to
his wife.
Four Mexican War letters of Carr and Chilton White, Ta- y lor's
brothers- in- law, are located in the Manuscri2ts Department,
VTM 1380.
Yiocraphical sketch: In April 1861, Thomas Thomson Taylor
( 1836-?) volunteered for three months' service in the 12th
Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, formed at Georgetown, O'nio.
The regiment remained at Camp Dennison, Cincinnati, until orders
were received in August to reorganize for three years' service.
He then re- enlisted as a Captain in the 47th Regiment.
In recognition of his fidelity in re2orting a plot of the Knights
of the Golden Circle to resist the draft, Taylor was promoted to
the rank of Major ( in April 1863, retroactive to December 1862);
he mustered out in August 1865 as a Colonel.
Taylor's first service was in Virginia and West Virginia. He
then spent six months recruiting in Ohio after the evacuation
of the Xanawha Valley. He arrived in Vicksburg, Xississippi,
the day before its surrender, and fought at Jackson, Mission
Ridge, and Larkin's Landing. He started on Sherman's march to
the sea, but was wounded at Fort McAllister, Georgia. In 1865,
he served as a member of the General Court Xartial in Washington,
D. C.
