Provenance: The Ohio Historical Society acquired the William S.
Scarborough Collection as a gift of Mrs. Wilhelmena S. Robinson,
Daytona Beach, Florida, in April 1972. Marjorie J. Myers
processed the collection in December 1980.

1875 A. B., Oberlin College, Oberlin, Ohio. Received
M. A., later from Oberlin College.
1877 Elected head of Classical Department at Wilber-force
University.
Published First Lessons in Greek, A. S. Barnes.
The first and only Greek book ever written by
a Negro.
1881 Married Sarah C. Bierce, Normal Department of
Wilberforce University.
1891 Elected to chair of Hellenistic Greek, Payne
Theological Seminary, Wilberforce University.
1897 Re- elected Professor of Greek and Latin, and
elected Vice- President of Wilberforce University.
1901 Delegate to Ecumenical. Methodist Conference
1908- 1920 President of Nilberforce University.
