Ridgly Family Papers

rrovenance: The Ohio Historical Society acquired the Ridgly
Family papers as a gift from Mrs. C. J. Olsen of Spring Lake,
Michigan in April, 1973. Clara Ireland processed the collec-tion
in March 1980.
Property Rights: The Ohio Historical Society owns the property
rights to this collection.
Copyrights: The copyrights to this co1lection have not been
dedicated to the public. Consideration of the requirements
of copyright is the responsibility of the author and publisher.
Access: This collection is open under the rules and regulations
of the Ohio Historical Society.
Citation: Researchers are requested to cite collection name,
collection number and the Ohio Historical Society in all foot-note
and bibliographical references.
Transfer: The following items were transferred to the Audio-visual
Department in April 1973; one envelope of miscellaneous
pictures from Eaton, Ohio, picture of a Sunday School class,
Christian Church, Eaton, ca. 1908; to the Natural History
Department in October 1978, the Eaton High School Herbarium,
1893; to the History Department in March 1980, one metal rag
splicer approximately 2" with accompanying instructions.
Biographical Sketch: The Ridgly Family resided near Eaton in
Preble Coilnty, Ohio. Benedick was a justice of the peace
during the 1830' s. Benedick D. Ridgly ( 1809- 1854) married
Rachel ( b. 1824) and they had six sons, Frederick W. G. ( b. 1842-
1863), John H. ( 1843- 1863), Chamber 0, [ b. 1845), Clinton T.
( b. 1847), Warren B. ( b. 1849) and J. L. ( b. 1850). Frederick
W. G. Ridgly served with Company E of the 35th O. V. T. and died
while in service in July 1863. John H. served in Company E in
the 5th O. V. C. and died in August 1863. Clinton T. was vice
president and president and Warren B. was secretary of the
Young Men's Debatinq Association from 1867 to 1872, Warren B.
also participated in the activities of the Eaton Baptist Church
during the 1870' s.
