Page I NOTES TO RESEARCHERS Provenance* : P r i o r to Zane Grey's death i n 1939, the Ohio H i s t o r i c a l Society ( OHS) ( then the Ohio S t a t e Archaeological and H i s t o r i c a l Society) corresponded with M r . Grey and requested a r e p r e s e n t a t i v e c o l l e c t i o n of his writings. Although Lina Grey responded i n 1942 by asking i f t h e Society was s t i l l i n t e r e s t e d , a p p a r e n t l y n o t h i n g m a t e r i a l i z e d f o r over 3 0 y e a r s . In July of 1971, Romer Grey of Pasadena, C a l i f o r n i a , Zane Grey's son, donated t o t h e Society 15 l i n e a r f e e t of Zane Grey material spanning the period from 1915 to 1963. This m a t e r i a l included ap-proximately 75 o r i g i n a l t y p e s c r i p t s , g a l l e y proofs, and comic s t r i p page proofs of Grey's western novels, s h o r t s t o r i e s , and s e r i a l s ; a scrapbook of correspondence from r e a d e r s ; copies of Grey's a r t i c l e s about deep sea f i s h i n g ; and miscellaneous i t e m s . The numerous news-paper c l i p p i n g s now i n t h e c o l l e c t i o n were probably also included. Betty Grosso, Zane Grey's daughter o f f e r e d t o sell four of h i s manuscripts i n September of 1971, but the Society had no funds f o r l a r g e s c a l e purchases. In January of 1974, t h r e e l i t e r a r y manuscripts were given to the OHS by Norris Schneider of Zanesville, Ohio. Two years l a t e r on September 3, 1976, t h r e e binders containing m a t e r i a l regarding Zane Grey were t r a n s f e r r e d to the OHS. These b i n d e r s , a l s o donated by Norris Schneider, included: 1 ) Xerox copies of l e t t e r s between Zane Grey and h i s agent Robert Davies, 1912- 1935; 2) l e t t e r s of Norris Schneider, B i l l Clark, D. C. Whitmore, C a r l t o n Jackson, e t c . , 1955- 1974; and 3) a t y p e s c r i p t and a master s e t of page proofs of - Zane Grey by Carl- ton Jackson, 1973. Access: The Zane Grey Collection is open to the p u b l i c i n t h e Ohio H i s t o r i c a l Society Library under normal r e s t r i c t i o n s . The volume t i t l e d The Voice of Zane Grey's Public is a v a i l a b l e on microfilm; t h e o r i g i n a l volume is r e s t r i c t e d due to its condition. The numerous newspaper c l i p p i n g s are a v a i l a b l e only on microfilm. Finding Aids: A f i n a l inventory to the Zane Grey C o l l e c t i o n is a v a i l a b l e i n the Library Division of the Ohio H i s t o r i c a l Society. Before each of the 99 folders of newspaper c l i p p i n g s , a t a r g e t has been filmed i n d i c a t i n g t h e contents.
