HISTORICAL SKETCH OF THE COLLECTION
George K. Mahanna and Frances Marian Ginevan of Columbus, Ohio were married in
1909. They were the parents of four sons: Darrell, born in 1910; Donald, born in 1911;
Robert, born in 1914 and Lucian, born in 1916. George Mahanna worked for the
Carmell Candy Company and the Walter M. Lowney Company in Columbus. In 1928
George Mahanna began working for the Imperial Ice Cream Company in Parkersburg,
West Virginia. The family moved to Parkersburg, West Virginia in February 1929. Their
sons each attended West Virginia University in Morgantown, West Virginia. The
Mahanna’s kept in touch with relatives in Columbus. In the 1930’ s son Donald returned
to Columbus to open his medical practice.

SCOPE AND CONTENTS OF THE COLLECTION
The collection is comprised of scrapbook pages recording the history of George and
Frances Mahanna and their family from 1909 to 1941. Photographs depict their homes
in Columbus, Ohio; automobiles owned by the family; family pets; their grand- children;
holiday gatherings with relatives; schools attended by their sons in Columbus and
Parkersburg; vacations and family outings. The family took vacations and outings to
locations in Ohio, such as Cedar Point, Olentangy Park in Columbus and Rocky Fork
caves, as well locations in Michigan, New York and West Virginia. The collection
includes both formal and informal portraits of the family.
