HISTORICAL SKETCH OF THE COLLECTION
In the mid to late nineteenth century there were many power and streetcar companies in Columbus, Ohio. These companies eventually merged into four surviving and/ or successor companies: the Columbus Edison Company, the Columbus Railway Company, the Columbus Light, Heat and Power Company and the Columbus Traction Company. The first step towards these companies eventually merging was the incorporation of the Columbus Railway and Light Company in 1903. This new corporation leased the Columbus Edison Company and the Columbus Railway Company. In 1907 they began leasing the Columbus Traction Company and in 1908 the Columbus Light, Heat and Power Company.
By 1914 all of the companies had merged to form the Columbus Railway, Power and Light Company. All of the electric, street car and heating companies in Columbus were then one corporation. In 1933 they reported that the Company was the largest taxpayer in the city and, with 1,509 employees, had the largest payroll of any employer in the city.
