HISTORICAL SKETCH OF THE COLLECTION
The program for the diorama “ Continuity and Change – The American Experience” explains that it was developed from the idea of presenting scenes in American history in a multi- media presentation. The show included over 100 hundred costumed characters; 4,000 slides; voices reading a professionally written, directed and taped script; and a musical score with songs appropriate to the time period of each segment. It was intended to be a “… Bicentennial tribute as diverse as varied and as unique as America itself. “
SCOPE AND CONTENTS OF THE COLLECTION
The collection is composed of slides, audio recordings and video recordings that document persons and events in American history. This material was used to present of the living diorama, “ Continuity and Change, The American Experience.” The diorama was produced by Hugh N. Brown for the U. S. Revolution Bicentennial. The program is presented in ten twenty- year “ segments” of American History, from 1776 to 1976. It was ten hours in length, shown over two days. The ten segments are titled: From Subjects to Citizens; The Search for Identity; Life in a New Nation; From Sea to Shining Sea; A Nation Divided; The Golden Door; Power and Problems; Depression and Reform; Confrontation; and A New Consciousness.
