HISTORICAL SKETCH OF THE COLLECTION
The Cooperative Extension Service system was created in 1914 by the passage of the Smith
Lever Act. The purpose of the Service is to disseminate the latest agricultural research
conducted at land grant universities to working farmers. In the 1930s the Cooperative
Extension Service assisted to implement New Deal era agricultural programs. During World
War II the Service was involved in projects to conserve resources and increase farm production.
The history of the Cooperative Extension Service in Ohio dates back to 1895 when students of
the Ohio State University School of Agriculture organized the Agricultural Students Union, a
forerunner of the Cooperative Extension Service.
