HISTORICAL SKETCH OF THE COLLECTION
The Lake Erie Islands have been popular recreation and vacation since the late nineteenth century. Wealthy and prominent Ohioan’s popularized the Lake Erie Islands as a vacation destination. The town of Put- In- Bay on South Bass Island is a particularly popular place for boating and fishing. The first hotels for tourists on the Island were built in the late 1860’ s and early 1870’ s. The United States Commission for Fish and Fisheries chose Put- in- Bay as the location for a fish hatchery in 1889. The state of Ohio built a fish hatchery near the U. S. fish hatchery in 1907. It was operated by the direction of the Ohio Division of Conservation and Natural Resources until 1946.
An important landmark on the Lake Erie coast is the Marblehead Lighthouse, one of the oldest lighthouses on the Great Lakes. It sits on the Marblehead Peninsula at the entrance to Sandusky Bay. The United States Congress appropriated $ 5,000 to construct the 50- foot, limestone tower in 1819. Civilian lighthouse keepers manned the lighthouse until 1946. At this time the United States Coast Guard took over operation of the lighthouse.
