HISTORICAL SKETCH OF THE COLLECTION
Michael Harsh enlisted in the Army in July 1966 at 20 years old. He married while in basic training in December 1966 and went back to military school until he was called to Vietnam in June 1967. He served in Vietnam from June of 1967 to June of 1968. He spent his remaining time in service between Germany and Fort Devens, Massachusetts and was discharged in June of 1970. The donor was part of the Army Security Agency, a military intelligence group.
SCOPE AND CONTENTS OF THE COLLECTION
The collection consists of photographs, slides and a letter recorded on reel- to- reel audiotape documenting the service of Michael Harsh with the United States Army in Vietnam from 1967- 1968. The three photographs depict Harsh in uniform and in the barracks. Fifty- six color slides include views of the Army Security Agency compound in Phu Bai, teaching English in Hue, various recreational activities, Christmas decorations in the barracks and Harsh and his fellow soldiers at work. The reel- to- reel audiotape is a letter that Harsh began recording to his wife. While recording the Army compound in Phu Bai was bombed and sounds of the attack are also captured on the tape.
