HISTORICAL SKETCH OF THE COLLECTION
The American Press Association, based in New York City, was a competitor of the Associated Press. They sold news stories to any newspaper for a weekly fee. In the late 1870’ s, the Association began distributing plates of type that were ready to print to small newspapers. During World War I, the American Press Association was operating at 225 to 229 West 39th St., New York, New York, as indicated on the back of several photographs in this collection.

SCOPE AND CONTENTS OF THE COLLECTION
This collection consists of approximately 580 black and white photographs from the American Press Association, taken during World War I, ca. 1914- 1918. The majority of the photographs depict the daily lives of soldiers from many different nations on and off the battle field. There are also photographs of ships, from warships to small private vessels. Additionally, there are photographs illustrating the impact of the war on civilians, including photographs of refugees. Nations represented in the collection include Australia, Austria- Hungary, Belgium, Canada, China, Denmark, England, Egypt, Finland, France, Germany, India, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Morocco, Netherlands, Norway, the Ottoman Empire, Portugal, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Scotland, Spain, Switzerland and the United States.
