HISTORICAL SKETCH OF THE COLLECTION
Lantern slides are hand drawn or photographic images on glass that are intended to be shown through a projector. They were often produced in sets and shown in schools, theaters and other public venues. Introduced in the United States in 1850, they were popular through World War I.
The slides in this collection illustrate an interest in agricultural education for children and young people, living in both urban and rural areas that began around the turn of the century. This trend was lead by Albert Belmont Graham, a school administrator from Clark County, Ohio. He advocated teaching children a scientific approach to agricultural. In 1902 he formed the first Boys and Girls Agricultural Club in Springfield, Ohio. The clubs advocated ‘ learning by doing’ and assisted children to raise gardens and farm animals. Eventually, these agricultural clubs became the 4- H organization.
