BIOGRAPHY OF CHARLES E. JARVIS
According to The Official Roster of Ohio Soldiers, Sailors and Marines in the World War, 1917- 18, Charles E. Jarvis was born in Columbus, Ohio in 1895 and was a resident of Columbus when he entered the Army on Dec. 7, 1917. He served in Company B, 28th Engineers Regiment until January 16, 1918. He was then in the Sanitary Detachment of the 28th Engineers until his honorable discharge on July 15, 1919 as a Private. A member of the American Expeditionary Forces from Feb. 10, 1918 to July 6, 1919, he participated in the campaigns of St. Mihiel and Meuse- Argonne. After the War, Mr. Jarvis lived in Columbus with his wife Mable and worked as an engineer, judging by an entry in the 1920- 21 R. L. Polk & Co’s Columbus City Directory.
SCOPE AND CONTENTS OF THE COLLECTION
The collection consists of 176 photographic and commercial postcards depicting people and places in the United States and France during World War I and 1919. Some of the photographic postcards are hand- labeled and contain images of Private Jarvis, other American and French soldiers and civilians, scenes in the United States on board ship, and in France. Several pictures trace the transit of American troops by railroad, ship and foot from the United States to France, and then from St. Nazaire on the western coast French to Nantes, Le Mans, and the regions of military concentration in northeast France. Places in the French Departments of Haute- Marne, Marne, Meuse, Moselle and the Vosges are especially well represented. Some postcards appear to have been sent from France by Private Jarvis to his wife Mable in the United States. Most of the commercial postcards were printed in France and depict French cities and towns, specific buildings and monuments, or various war scenes. Many images show damage
