HISTORICAL SKETCH OF THE COLLECTION
William Henry Harrison was the ninth President of the United States, and the first from Ohio. He was born in 1773 in Virginia. He was home schooled as a boy, and attended Hampden Sidney College in Richmond, Virginia where he studied medicine. In 1791 he was commissioned as an ensign in the First Infantry of the Regular Army and began his career as a frontier soldier. In 1792, he was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel and became the aide- de- camp of General Anthony Wayne. He fought at the Battle of Fallen Timbers and then did garrison duty at North Bend, Indiana and Fort Washington in Cincinnati. In 1798, he resigned from the army.
In 1798, he was appointed Secretary of the Northwest Territory by President John Adams and was influential in obtaining passage of the act for the division of the territory into the states of Ohio and Indiana. In addition, he negotiated several land treaties with Native Americans that gave control of large amounts of land to settlers. In 1811 he won a battle against Tecumseh at Tippecanoe.
