HISTORICAL SKETCH OF THE COLLECTION
Ulysses S. Grant was the eighteenth president of the United States. He was born April 27, 1822 in Point Pleasant, Ohio. He received an appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York in 1839 where he graduated in 1843. He was first stationed near St. Louis, Missouri where he met Julia Boggs Dent, whom he later married in 1848.
During the Mexican War ( 1846- 1848) he served under General Zachary Taylor and General Winfield Scott. He then served at Fort Vancouver, Oregon and Fort Humboldt, California until 1854 when he resigned from the Army. He began to farm in Missouri and entered into real estate in St. Louis, but failed in both. In 1860 he moved to Galena, Illinois to join his father and brothers in a leather goods business.
At the outbreak of the Civil War in 1861 he helped recruit, equip, and drill troops in Galena and then accompanied them to Springfield, where he was appointed an aide and assigned to the state Adjutant General's office. He soon was appointed Brigadier General and gained command of the District of Southeast Missouri. In 1862 he won the first major Union victory of the war when Fort Donelson, on the Cumberland River in Tennessee, surendered with about 15,000
