H i s t o r i c a l sketch: The Grand Army of t h e Republic was formed
i n 1866 by the Rev. William J. Rutledge and D r . B. F. Stephenson, who,
while s e r v i n g i n 1864 under t h e command of Ohio General William
Tecumseh Sherman, o r i g i n a t e d t h e idea of forming a t t h e c l o s e
of t h e C i v i l War an a s s o c i a t i o n of former Union troops t o
p r e s e r v e f r i e n d s h i p s and p e r p e t u a t e memorials of common t r i a l s
and dangers. The o r g a n i z a t i o n ' s c a r d i n a l p r i n c i p l e s were
f r a t e r n i t y , c h a r i t y and l o y a l t y .
The f i r s t post was c h a r t e r e d A p r i l 6 , 1 8 6 6 , i n Decatur, I l l i n o i s
The f i r s t encampment was held i n I n d i a n a p o l i s , Indiana, i n 1866,
and t h e f i n a l encampment was i n I n d i a n a p o l i s , I n d i a n a , i n 1 9 4 9 .
Ohio P o s t s of t h e Grand Army of t h e Republic were formed i n t h e
s p r i n g o f 1866, t h e f i r s t i n C a r r o l l t o n , and t h e second i n
Z a n e s v i l l e .
