Castleman papers a s a g i f t of Marie Castleman, Columbus, Ohio,
in May 1980. Clara Ireland processed t h e c o l l e c t i o n i n March
1981.

Biographical sketch: Marie Castleman received a bachelor of
a r t s degree from Howard University i n Washington, DC, and a
master's degree i n s o c i a l work from the University of P i t t s -
burgh. Castleman has worked with family and c h i l d r e n ' s service
agencies, agencies concerned with physical and mental h e a l t h ,
and as a s o c i a l worker with the Veterans Administration.
Castleman was e l e c t e d t o t h e Columbus Board of Education i n
1971 and re- elected i n 1975. She has l i v e d i n Columbus since
her marriage to John B l a i r Castleman i n 1960. The Castlemans
have one son.

Scope and content: The Marie Castleman Papers d a t e from 1969 t o
1978 and occupy one- quarter cubic f o o t . The papers concern
Castleman's e l e c t i o n , r e - e l e c t i o n , and tenure as a member of the
Columbus Board of Education. The c o l l e c t i o n is divided i n t o two
s e r i e s r e f l e c t i n g Castleman as a candidate and as a member of
t h e board.
The papers in s e r i e s I concern Castleman's e l e c t i o n and re- election
t o t h e board and date 1971 and 1975. These papers c o n s i s t of
correspondence, information forms, newspaper c l i p p i n g s , campaign
committee papers, press r e l e a s e s , and campaign t a l k s . The material
documents such a c t i v i t i e s as Castleman's apuearance at public
gatherings or on t e l e v i s i o n to s t a t e her views as a candidate.
