Federation of Government Employees, Local 1148, Columbus, Ohio,
Records a s a g i f t of Local 1148, through the auspices of the
p r e s i d e n t , James E. Meadows, Jr., i n September 1980. Clara
Ireland processed t h e c o l l e c t i o n i n September 1980.

Organizational sketch: The American Federation o f Government
Employees, Local 1148, was chartered i n Columbus, Ohio, i n 1948.
A t t h a t t i m e , members w e r e governmental c i v i l i a n employees a t
t h e Columbus General Depot. The depot subsequently became the
Defense Construction Supply Center, ( DCSC) an i n s t a l l a t i o n of
t h e Defense Logistics Agency, a sub- agency of the Department
of Defense.
Local 1148 became sole bargaining agent f o r its members in 1968.
Current membership of Local 1148 c o n s i s t s of the non- supervisory
employees of DCSC and the two other agencies located a t the
c e n t e r , t h e Defense Systems Automation Center ( DSA), and the
Defense I n d u s t r i a l S e c u r i t y O f f i c e ( DISCO).
Local 1148 members meet monthly with o f f i c e r s and stewards- at- large
e l e c t e d a t t h e December meeting. Each o f f i c e , d i r e c t o r a t e , and
tenant a c t i v i t y elects one steward f o r its area. The o f f i c e r s
and stewards serve as the executive c o u n c i l . The council meets
p r i o r t o t h e regular membersh' e t i n g to review and make
recommendations on acbid, n s to d t o the membership.
