Preliminary Inventory
Collection Synopsis
Provenance: The Ohio Historical Society acquired the Samuel J.
Harrison Papers as a gift of Dr. Mary Margaret Koon, his grand-daughter,
Portland, Indiana, in November 1977 and October 1980.
David Gray prepared the preliminary inventory in December 1980.
Property rights: The Ohio Historical Society owns the property
rights to this collection.
Copyrights: Dr. Mary Margaret Koon has dedicated such copyrights
as she possesses in these papers to the public. Consideration of
all other copyrights is the responsibility of the author and
publisher.
Access: This collection is open under the rules and regulations
of the Ohio Historical Society.
Citation: Researchers are requested to cite collection name,
collection number, and the Ohio Historical Society in all footnote
and bibliographic references.
Transfer: The following items were transferred to the History
Department, December 23, 1980: One Virginia Treasury note, three
fractional currency notes, and one postage currency note. Two
union veteran reunion pins were transferred to the Audiovisual
Department and five books transferred to the library, December
23, 1980.
Biographical sketch: Samuel J. Barrison was born in 1839 in Darke
County, Ohio. A farmer by profession, Harrison enlisted in Co. G,
44th Regiment, O. V. I., at Hollansburg, Ohio, on September 9, 1861.
Harrison was promoted to corporal and later to first sergeant when
he reenlisted January 5, 1864, at Strawberry Plain, Tennessee.
Transferred to Co. G, 8th Regiment, O. V. C., Harrison was promoted
to second lieutenant on May 11, 1865. Harrison was mustered out
with his company at Clarksburg, West Virginia on July 30, 1865.
While serving with the 44th Regiment, O. V. I., Harrison saw action
against Confederate forces in Kentucky and participated in the
battle at Lewisburg, Virginia, in May 1862. He was also involved
in siege operations around Knoxville, Tennessee in 1863. After a
brief furlough, Harrison joined Co. G, 8th Regiment, O. V. C. in
operations in West Virginia early in 1864. In October, Harrison
was captured by Confederate raiders near Beverly, West Virginia
and following a brief pursuit was liberated the same day by his
own unit. After the war Harrison returned to Republican, Ohio,
and later moved to Delaware, Ohio. Harrison was a member of the
Masons and the G. A. R. and worked as a traveling salesman until his
death in 1905.
