Biographical sketch: Warren Pate was born on March 26, 1 9 1 2 ,
in Knoxville, Tennessee, and attended school i n Columbus, Ohio.
Pate joined the United Automobile Workers i n 1 9 4 2 and s t a r t e d
working with the Ohio AFL- CIO i n 1958. While serving as Director
of the C i v i l Rights Department of the Ohio AFL- CIO, Pate sponsored
a successful r e s o l u t i o n at its 1974 convention to support the
creation of Martin Luther King Day in Ohio. Pate l a t e r served
as Chairman of the Ohioans f o r Martin Luther King Holiday Com-mittee
and was instrumental i n the establishment 05 the holiday
in 1975.

Scope and content: The Warren Pate Papers occupy one- quarter
cubic foot and date from 1973 t o 1975. The papers document
P a t e ' s r o l e in the e f f o r t t o e s t a b l i s h Martin Luther King Day
in Ohio. The minutes of the Ohioans f o r Martin Luther King
Holiday Committee, dated 1975, d e t a i l the committee's e f f o r t s
to enact l e g i s l a t i o n e s t a b l i s h i n g Martin Luther King Day. L e t t e r s ,
datinq from 1973 to 1975, h i g h l i g h t P a t e ' s work i n lobbying for
che holiday. Correspondents include Ohio l e g i s l a t o r s ; l o c a l
government o f f i c i a l s ; and r e p r e s e n t a t i v e s of schools, labor, and
r e l i g i o u s organizations. Folders four and f i v e contain copies of
l e g i s l a t i v e r e s o l u t i o n s and b i l l s , 1973 to 1975, e s t a b l i s h i n g
Martin Luther King Day i n several s t a t e s and m u n i c i p a l i t i e s
throuqhout the United S t a t e s .
