While a t t e n d i n g school^, P a t t e r s o n learned c a b i n e t making and paper hanging from h i s f a t h e r . P a t t e r s o n graduated from C h e s t e r h i l l . High School i n 1891 and a t t e n d e d t h e Ohio S t a t e U n i v e r s i t y u n t i l h i s f a t h e r ' s death i n 1894. H e r e t u r n e d t o C h e s t e r h i l l t o run h i s f a t h e r ' s c a b i n e t making b u s i n e s s and c a r e f o r h i s mother. P a t t e r s o n began h i s c a r e e r a s a banker i n 1901 when he accepted t h e c a s h i e r p o s i t i o n at. the F i r s t National Bark of C h e s t e r h i l l . . fie was forced i n t o semi-- retirement due t o i l l n e s s i n 1935. In 1896, P a t t e r s o n married Edith M. S c h o f i e l d , a daughter of a prominent Quaker family i n C h e s t e r h i l l . They had t h r e e c h i l d r e n : E d i t h , George, and John. Carl P a t t e r s o n was r e c e i v e d as a member of t h e S o c i e t y of Friends i n 1897 and was recorded a s a m i n i s t e r in 19x2. P a t t e r s o n became a c t i v e i n t h e S o c i e t y of Friends and served a s a conimittee member of t h e F i d u c i a r y T r u s t e e s of t h e Ohio Yearly Meeting, and of t h e Friends Boarding School i n Rarrresvill. e, Ohio; a s p r e s i d e n t of t h e Morgan County M i n i s t e r i a l . Association; and a:; an e x e c u t i v e eomniittee niemher of t h e 0hi. o Council. of Churches. P a t t e r s o n was involved i n t h e peace movemerit during World War I and t h e disarmament and World Court Treaty contro-v e r s i e s of t h e 1 9 2 0 s and 1930s.
