Area Humane Society Records as a g i f t of the Society, through
t h e auspices o f t h e d i r e c t o r , Doris Arnold, in July 1 9 8 1 .

Organizational sketch: The Capital Area Humane Society was
organized on December 4 , 1883, in Columbus, Ohio. The Society
was founded t o " prevent c r u e l t y to animals, t o p r o t e c t neglected
c h i l d r e n , and t o c r e a t e a public sentiment against t h e abuse of
innocent c r e a t u r e s , whether of the b r u t e kind o r human." The
Capital Area Humane Society is a non- profit organization governed
by its board of d i r e c t o r s .

Scope and content: The Capital Area Humane Society Records date
from 1883 t o 1910 and occupy one- half cubic foot. The records
c o n s i s t of board of d i r e c t o r s minutes, summaries of court cases,
and r e p o r t s . Minutes, dating from 1883 to 1888 and 1896 t o
1900, document the a c t i v i t i e s and i n t e r e s t s of the CAHS and
include f i n a n c i a l statements and s t a t i s t i c a l r e p o r t s concerning
t h e incidence o f abuse of children and animals in t h e Columbus
area. The court case summarieg 1 9 0 1 t o 1 9 1 0 , d e t a i l the conduct
and r e s o l u t i o n of many court cases involving c h i l d and animal
abuse. The r e p o r t s , 1897 t o 1 9 0 0 , include f i n a n c i a l statements
and s t a t i s t i c a l reports concerning the incidence of c h i l d and
animal abuse.
