Organizational sketch: The Columbus Area Civil Rights Council
was founded in April 1964, in Columbus, Ohio. Reverend Russell
M. Jones organized the council as a non- profit organization
managed by a president, three vice- presidents, a secretary, and
a treasurer, with membership open to all citizens and groups.
The steering committee and board of directors oversaw the
council's activities and reported to the membership through the
monthly newsletter, Civil Rights News. The council's goals
included " equality of opportunity, justice, and dignity for all
people, particularly in education, employment, housing, police-community
relations, and prison reform." With the cooperation
of other agencies, the council acted upon these goals by develop-ing
Project QUIET ( Quality Integrated Education Tomorrow); the
Housing Opportunity Center of Metropolitan Columbus; and " Blue-print
for Action," a workshop to establish economic and educa-tional
opportunities for all races. Throughout the 1970s, the
council was involved in desegregation cases against the Columbus
public schools. The council held its last meeting in April 1980.
