Provenance: The Ohio H i s t o r i c a l Society acquired the Research
Club Columbus, Ohio, Records as a g i f t of Mrs. Harold Glassburn,
Columbus, Ohio, in March 1982. Richard W. Arpi processed the
c o l l e c t i o n i n July 1983.

H i s t o r i c a l sketch: The Research Club of Columbus, Ohio, was
organized i n October 1897 as a s o c i a l and l i t e r a r y club f o r
women. The c l u b ' s motto was a verse from E c c l e s i a s t e s , " I
applied mine heart t o know, and to search, and to seek out
wisdom." The c l u b ' s o b j e c t , as s t a t e d i n t h e i r c o n s t i t u t i o n s ,
was " to bring together those i n t e r e s t e d in the i n t e l l e c t u a l and
c u l t u r a l improvement of women, t o s t i m u l a t e i n v e s t i g a t i o n of
s o c i a l and p o l i t i c a l e t h i c s , and t o lend influence toward the
solution of the a l t r u s t i c problems of the day."
The club held meetinqs twice monthly from October through May a t
t h e home of a member or a t some public place where luncheon could
be served and a speaker heard. Themes of meet~ ngs ranged from
discussions of l i t e r a t u r e , health, and t r a v e l to p o l i t i c s , r e l i g i o n ,
and s o c i a l problems of the day. Membership c l a s s i f i c a t i o n s included
a c t l v e , a s s o c i a t e , non- resident, and honorary with a l i m i t of f i f t y
actLve members and twenty- flve a s s o c i a t e members. Admittance was
granted upon unanimous vote of the membership. The presidents of
t h e Ohio State Federation of Women's Clubs and the Columbus Fed-e
r a t i o n of Women's clubs served as ex- officio honorary members.
In tne 1 9 7 0 s , i n t e r e s t i n the club waned and it was disbanded.
