Provenance: The Ohio H i s t o r i c a l Society acquired the Columbus
( Ohio) Home for the Aged Records as a g i f t of the home, through the
auspices of Janet Taylor i n November 1982. Barbara Floyd processed
the c o l l e c t i o n i n February 1983.

r i g h t s to t h i s c o l l e c t i o n .

H i s t o r i c a l sketch: The managers of the Columbus Home f o r the
Friendless decided i n October 1886 t o b u i l d a residence home f o r
the purpose of caring for poor, aged women in the Central Ohio
area. An a s s o c i a t i o n of about one hundred people incorporated in
January 1887 t o organize the Columbus Old Ladies Home i n a house
on East Broad S t r e e t donated by Colonel A. G. Patton. I n June 1883,
the cornerstone was l a i d for a new home on East Broad S t r e e t
property donated by W i l l i a n P? onypenny. In December 1888, t h i s new
home was completed, and i n January 1891 the name changed to the
Columbus Home f o r the Aged. The name changed t o Park View i n 1975
and operated u n t i l 1931, when endowment fund money was used t o
move the fourteen remaining r e s i d e n t s t o the Whetstone Convalescent
Cenrer i n Columbus.
Organizational sketch: The purpose of the Columbus ( Ohio) H0m. e f o r
the Aged, according to its 1918 c o n s t i t u t i o n , was the caring f o r
and supporting of aged men and women who lived i n poverty and had
no r e l a t i v e s . A p r e s i d e n t , two vice p r e s i d e n t s , a s e c r e t a r y , an
a s s i s t a n t s e c r e t a r y , a t r e a s u r e r , and nine t r u s t e e s governed the
home. A t the f i r s t meeting each year, the t r u s t e e s appointed a t
l e a s t t h i r t y dues- paying rneribers of *& e organization t o Yne Zcard
of Lady Managers. The managers made r u l e s for members, emplr; yees,
and r e s i d e n t s . The managers had r e s p o n s i b i l i t y f o r appointins the
matron, who served as the immediate supervisor of the home. The
managers also decided who would be admitted to the home. Applicants
had to be a t l e a s t s i x t y - e i g h t years o l d and r e s i d e n t s of Franklin
County. Xoney t o operate the home was divided i n t o two funds, a
