aiographical sketch: James Allen Eihodes was born in Coalton,
Jackson County, Ohio, on September 13, 1 9 0 9 . After h i s faxi1y
moved to Columbus, he attended The Ohio State University and
served i n h i s f i r s t p o l i t i c s 1 o f f i c e as a me~. ber of the Columbus
Eoard of Education from 1937 to 1939. He held two other c i t y
o f f i c e s , t h a t of a u d i t o r from 1 9 4 1 to 1944, and nayor froa 1944
to 1953, before being e l e c t e d a u d i t o r o f the s t a t e in 1953. Iie
servsd as s t a t e a u d i t o r for ten y e a r s , leaving when he defeated
incumbent Michael V. DiSalle in the 1962 governor's race. With
h i s re- election in 1 9 6 6 , he became the f i r s t to serve two
consecutive term ~ ~ a d tehre 1954 c o n s t i t u t i o n a l amendmenr e s t a b l i s h -
ing four- yezr terms for governors. He was electec! for two more
terms as governor in 1 9 7 4 and 1978.

Scope and content: The James A. Rhodes Papers consist of eighty-eigi.,
t cuSic f e e t of o f f i c e f i l e s and newspaper clippings contained
in twenty- four t r a n s f e r czses and forty- one record center boxes
collected dcring Xhodes's 1974 to 1982 years as governor of Ohio.
The m a t e r i a l includes correspondence, information on f e d e r a l
agencies, and extensive clippings concerning the governor's
a c t i v i t i e s taken from news2apers t? roughout the s t a t e . The collec-t
i o n is arranged by subject.
