B i o g r a p h i c a l s k e t c h : C h a r l e s Y e l v i l l e Shipman was born in 1874
in New York C i t y , t h e son of C h a r l e s and Mary T h e r e s e B r i t t o n
Shipman. A f t e r e a r n i n g a d e g r e e i n c h e m i s t r y from Hasbrouck
i n s t i t u t e , New J e r s e y , he worked f o r t h e Oakland Chemical Company
in New York. Also w h i l e i n New York, he m a r r i e d C l a r e C r e s s e y ,
and was a c t i v e in t h e Brooklyn P h o t o g r a p h i c S o c i e t y and t h e S t a t e n
I s l a n d Museum. I n 1917 he and h i s w i f e moved t o W i l l o u g h b y , O h i o ,
where he e s t a b l i s h e d t h e J. H. R. P r o d u c t s Company, a p r o d u c e r of
c h e m i c a l s used by t h e government d u r i n g World War I .
A f t e r r e t i r i n g i n 1924, Shipman d e v o t e d h i s l i f e t o o r n i t h o l o g y ,
n a t u r e p h o t o g r a p h y , and c o n s e r v a t i o n . He j o i n e d t h e Burroughs
Nature Club of W i l l o u g h b y , and f o r twenty y e a r s s e r v e d as p r e s i d e n t .
He a l s o was p r e s i d e n t of t h e C l e v e l a n d B i r d Club and Lake E r i e Wild
' l o v ~ e r Club.
During t h e 1920s Shipman s t u d i e d and p h o t o g r a p h e d b a l d e a g l e s n e a r
V e r m i l l i o n , Ohio, w i t h Dr. F r a n c i s H . H e r r i c k of Western Reserve
U n i v e r s i t y . Shipman used movie f i l m and p h o t o g r a p h s he produced
d u r i n g t h e s e s t u d i e s a s w e l l a s some 3000 h a n d - p a i n t e d s l i d e s in
l e c t u r e s he gave t o n a t u r e c l u b s and s c h o o l c h i l d r e n . During h i s
l i f e t i m e he produced o v e r 100,000 n e g a t i v e s , m o s t l y o f w i l d l i f e ,
and r e c e i v e d numerous p r i z e s f o r h i s p h o t o g r a p h y .
