B i o g r a p h i c a l s k e t c h e s : S y l v e s t e r Korton Higby was born September
1 9 , 1819, t o Dexter and Rosannah Edwards E l l s w o r t h Xigby. H e
served a s c a p t a i n i n t h e 1st Brigade, 16th D i v i s i o n , Ohio M i l i t i a
from 1846 t o 1852. Higby died December 31, 1885.
Phoebe S t a f f o r d Higby " ills, s i s t e r of S y l v e s t e r Higby, was born
January 31, 1802. She married Joshua M i l l s who became t h e second
mayor of Cleveland, Ohio, s e r v i n g 1838- 1839 and 1842.
Charles Davis Higby, son of S y l v e s t e r Higby, was born October 11,
1843, i n Richmondale, Ross County, Ohio. He served as Q u a r t e r
Master Sergeant i n t h e 53rd Regiment, Ohio Volunteer I n f a n t r y
d u r i n g t h e C i v i l War under William Tecumseh Sherman. A f t e r t h e
war he moved from C h i l l i c o t h e , Ohio, t o Higby, Ohio, where he
worked a s a farmer and merchant. H e a l s o served a s postmaster
and township t r e a s u r e r f o r Higby. He married Mary Louise Crowe
i n 1876 and the couple had s i x c h i l d r e n . Charles Higby died when
s t r u c k by a t r a i n i n Higby on June 4 , 1911.
