B i o g r a p h i c a l s k e t c h : Harold J u l e Zimmerman was born in D e t r o i t ,
M i c h i g a n , on A p r i l 20, 1892. He g r a d u a t e d from Case I n s t i t u t e of
T e c h n o l o g y , C l e v e l a n d , Ohio, in 1915 w i t h a d e g r e e i n e l e c t r i c a l
e n g i n e e r i n g . He moved t o Willoughby, Ohio, where he worked as an
i n d u s t r i a l management c o n s u l t a n t .
Zimmerman, who was a c t i v e i n t h e c o n s e r v a t i o n movement, was a
member of t h e Burroughs Nature Club ( s e r v i n g a s p r e s i d e n t from
1952 t o 1 9 6 6 ) , t h e C l e v e l a n d A u d u b o n S o c i e t y , t h e C l e v e l a n d
Museum of N a t u r a l H i s t o r y , Holden Arboretum, t h e a d v i s o r y com-m
i t t e e of t h e Lake County Park Board, t h e S i e r r a Club, and t h e
Ohio C h a p t e r of The Nature Conservancy ( T N C ) . In 1968 he r e c e i v e d
t h e D i s t i n g u i s h e d Achievement Award d u r i n g Ohio C o n s e r v a t i o n
Achievement Day c e r e m o n i e s . The award was given t o Zimmerman
f o r h i s work a s chairman of t h e Ohio TNC's committee t o a c q u i r e
Mentor Marsh in Lake County, Ohio. TNC a c q u i r e d t h e land i n 1965
f o r p r e s e r v a t i o n as a n a t u r a l museum. Zimmerman d i e d i n J a n u a r y
1984.
