Scope and content: The United S t a t e s . Post Office Department
Records, dating from 1835 to 1857, consist of one- half cubic foot
of accounts from the post o f f i c e s in Hartsgrove, Urbana, and
Worthington, Ohio. While the material covers only sporadic years
and is not comprehensive of t h e workings of these o f f i c e s , it
does provide i n s i g h t i n t o the various types of record- keeping
performed by the postmaster.
The Hartsgrove, Ashtabula County, Ohio, p o s t a l records date from
April 1851 t o August 1852, during t h e tenure ( 1838- 1861) of post-master
William J a r v i s . The " Accounts of Hails Received," are
recorded a t i r r e g u l a r i n t e r v a l s l i s t i n g d a t e , o f f i c e of o r i g i n ,
and various f i n a n c i a l information.
The Urbana, Champaign County, Ohio, postal " Accounts of Newspapers
and Pamphlets received," date q u a r t e r l y from July 1835 to December
1836, and January 1839 to September 1840, during the tenure ( 1829-
1841) of William Hunt as postmaster. The accounts l i s t date
received, xime of publication, where published, how many times a
week, how many subscribers, number of newspapers and pamphlets,
and amount of postage and f r e e mail.
The Worthlngton, Franklin County, Ohio, p o s t a l records date from
1843 to 1857, during the two terms ( 1843- 1849, 1853- 1857) of
George H. Griswold as postmaster. The accounts record mails
received, mails sent, newspapers recelved and s e n t , and miscel-laneous
information. The mails received date from July 1843
through December 3 l , 1856, and- record date, o f f i c e of o r i g i n a l ,
and f i n a n c i a l s t a t u s . The " Account or' Mails Sent," ( 1843- 1856)
lists d a t e ; o f f i c e sent t o ; and whether impaid, paid, or f r e e .
