B i o g r a p h i c a l s k e t c h : A r c h i e A . Cowles was born i n G a r r e t t s v i l l e ,
Ohio, where many o f h i s r e l a t i v e s c o n t i n u e d t o l i v e , i n c l u d i n q
h i s f a t h e r , and c o u s i n , B e r t F . G r o a t . In 1904 Cowles was l i v i n q
i n C l e v e l a n d working as an e l e v a t o r o p e r a t o r , and i n v o l v e d in t h e
S o c i a l i s t movement.
Cowles s u f f e r e d f r o m p o o r h e a l t h i n c l u d i n g " c a t a r r h " in h i s t h r o a t ,
i m p a i r e d h e a r i n g , and t r o u b l e d e y e s i g h t . Because of t h e s e problems
Cowles began s p e n d i n g w i n t e r s in Hot S p r i n q s , A r k a n s a s , where t h e
w a t e r was b e l i e v e d t o have c u r a t i v e p r o p e r t i e s . In 1905 Cowles was
p l a n n i n g t o r i d e h i s b i c y c l e from C l e v e l a n d t o Hot S p r i n g s , b u t due
t o t h e bad c o n d i t i o n s o f most r u r a l r o a d s he o n l y t r a v e l e d a s f a r
a s D e l a w a r e , O h i o , b e f o r e he r e t u r n e d t o C l e v e l a n d by t r a i n . He
c o n t i n u e d t o spend h i s summers i n C l e v e l a n d a l t h o u q h h i s h e a l t h
p r o g r e s s i v e l y d e t e r i o r a t e d . While i n Hot S p r i n a s i n 1908 he
d e c i d e d t o remain t h e r e p e r m a n e n t l y . Cowles p u r c h a s e d a s m a l l
p a r c e l o f l a n d o n which t o r a i s e c h i c k e n s and grow a q a r d e n . T h e r e
i s no i n f o r m a t i o n a b o u t Cowles' l i f e a f t e r 1908.
