HISTORY OF THE WEINMAN PUMP MANUFACTURING COMPANY
The Weinman Family started producing steam- driven pumps in Columbus, OH in the late 1860s. William N. Weinman took over the business in 1890 and expanded the operation.
First known as the Weinman Machine Works, a general machine shop, it became a producer of horizontal and vertical reciprocating pumps. In 1909, the business moved from its original location at 21 and 23 North Scioto Street to a new location at 270 Spruce Street. At this time, it became incorporated as the Weinman Pump Manufacturing Co.
In the years following, the company expanded its operations at 270 Spruce Street, including a bronze foundry addition in 1922. Manufacturing facilities and testing laboratories were added in 1926, and a two- story office building in 1928. After the Depression and World War Two, Weinman pump continued to expand, adding a warehouse in 1948, a pattern shop and storage building in 1951, and a two- story addition to its office building in 1952.
As the coal industry declined, and steam locomotives were replaced by diesel, centrifugal pumps became the standard. By 1952, Weinman Pump was almost exclusively making centrifugal pumps and due to the company’s experience in the field and early developmental knowledge, Weinman became known as centrifugal experts.
