STONE/ BROWN FAMILY HISTORY
The story of this family began in the United State when Deacon Gregory Stone immigrated to America on the ship “ Increase” along with his wife and children and his brother, Simon. They settled in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1635, in which area his descendents remained until the 18th Century. Alexander and Juliette Brown are the direct descendents of Gregory Stone on both their paternal ( five generations from his grandson John) and maternal ( six generations from his grandson Jonathan) lines. Members of the Stone- Brown family, therefore, are aunts, uncles and cousins to each other; this explains why the same people are referred to as relatives in letters and photographs of both lines.
Pioneers from both sides of the family moved with their families to the area around Belpre, Ohio. Captain Jonathan Stone and his wife, Susannah, moved to Ohio in 1789. They lived with their children in a house inside the garrison in Belpre for six years until the threat of Indian attacks had lessened. Stone was a tanner, but all three of his songs set up their own farms in the vicinity of Belpre.
Jonathan’s cousin, Israel Stone, arrived in Marietta, Ohio in April, 1789. There he contracted with General Rufus Putnam to clear land at Belpre for eight dollars a day and the right to occupy it fro three years after it was cleared. He soon sent for his son, Rufus, to help him in this venture. Israel’s wife, Lydia and the rest of their family joined them in 1790.
Rufus Stone began farming in McConnelsville, Ohio. Most of the rest of the family also settled into farming the area, and also served in the state militia, courts and legislature as well; unfortunately, little else is known about them except that most lived out their lives in Ohio.
