Wetmore papers from Florence Albery and Edith Alberty in 1950 and

Biographical sketch: Charles Henry Wetmore, son of Izrahiah and
Phebe Wetmore, was born in Stratford, Fairfield County, Connecticut,
on May 6, 1783. Wetmore entered Yale University in 1800 and grad-uated
in 1804. He served as usher at Lansingburgh Academy, Lansing-burgh,
New York, during 1805. While serving at the academy, he also
studied law with Daniel Allen, Esq. and Hickok. After six months of
law, he transferred his efforts to the sutdy of medicine with Dr.
Henry of Lansingburgh. He resigned from the academy in December of
1805 and moved to Troy, New York, where he studied with Dr. Ely
Burritt. Wetmore became licensed in New Yor! c in 1808 and continued
his medical studies at the College of Physicians and Surgeons, Univer-sity
of the State of New York. During the next ten years, Wetmore
practiced medicine in Troy, Hoosick Falls, Pittstown, Waterford, and.
New York City, New York.
Wetmore was commissioned as surgeon's mate in 1810 in the New York
militia. He served briefly as surqeon of the 144th Regiment during
the War of 1812. He was appointed and commissioned surgeon of the
5th Regiment, Second Brigade, 7th Division of the Ohio Plilitia in
1221 and received an exemption from military duty in times of p - a ce
in 1826.
Wetmore married Eliza Rathbone ( 1791- 1853) of Mew York City in 1814.
The couple moved to Ohio in 1319, settling on land granted to her
father, John Rathbone. This tract of land is in the Beechwold area
of present day Columbus. The land became the Sroperty of Eliza
Netmore upon the death of her father in 1842.
