HISTORICAL SKETCH OF THE COLLECTION
Jesse Pritchard Forbes was a self-described “capitalist” who was born in Uhrichsville,
Tuscarawas County, Ohio. His parents, Thomas and Clara Pritchard were farmers that
raised four children. Later in Jesse’s childhood the family lived in Coshocton. Jesse
went to Denison University and became a lawyer in March of 1879. He married Maria
Hay on December 30 of that same year. He was elected to the Ohio House of
Representatives for two terms as a representative of Coshocton County from January 2,
1888-October 1891 and then elected to the Ohio State Senate for one term between
January 4, 1892 and October 1893. He remained in Coshocton, Ohio until his death on
November 1, 1937.
SCOPE AND CONTENTS OF THE COLLECTION
Jesse P. Forbes traveled in the late 1880’s to the western United States. He visited
Arizona, California, New Mexico and Wyoming. Forbes photographs scenes of towns
and Native American’s along the way. There are images of trains moving as well as
images of scenes taken from the back of a train. Included in the albums are images of
Texas and Mexico as well as a bit of Coshocton, Ohio which show pictures of family
buildings and his wife, Maria Hay Forbes. The images are notated in Forbes own hand.
