HISTORICAL SKETCH OF THE COLLECTION
D. Henry Overman was a native of Waverly, Ohio and a resident of Columbus. He graduated from The Ohio State University in 1923 with a degree in civil engineering. Overman joined the Ohio Highway Department on June 10, 1918 where he was employed until his retirement in 1964. He served as the assistant chief for the Bureau of Bridges for nine years, and served as the chief of the Bureau of Bridges for his last eight years on the job. Overman also made an impact on bridge design with his thesis "Design of Highway Bridges Based on Frequency of Heavy Vehicles.” During his approximately 45 year career Overman designed a number of bridges in Ohio, including the stone-faced bridge over the Scioto River at Routes 161 and 33 in Dublin, Ohio and the Lorain Ave. Viaduct, a steel bridge in Cleveland. The Lorain Ave. Viaduct, on Route 10 spanning the Rocky River Valley, received the American Institute of Steel Construction Award for "Most Beautiful Steel Bridge, Class B" in 1935.
