HISTORICAL SKETCH OF THE COLLECTION
Edward Sinclair Thomas was the first of four children born to lawyer Edward B. and Tempe Sinclair Thomas on April 22, 1891 in Woodsfield, Monroe County, Ohio. The family moved to Columbus early in his childhood and Edward received his schooling and undergraduate education in that city. He graduated with an A.B. from the Ohio State University in 1913 and followed in his father’s profession, studying law through 1916. He was admitted to the bar the same year and began his law practice. He practiced law until 1931 when he pursued his interest in natural history to work as a curator at the Ohio Historical Society. He received an Honorary Doctorate in Science from Capital University in 1944. While acting as curator at the Ohio State Museum, he was also chairman of the Franklin County Metro Park Board, a fellow at the Entomology Society of America, president of the Ohio Academy of Science, a member of the American Ornithologists Union and Wilson Ornithological Club. He wrote a weekly nature column for the Columbus Dispatch as the “Out of Doors” editor and authored more than 50 articles and booklets on natural history, entomology, ornithology and herpetology. 1n 1938, Edward S. Thomas married Marian Washburn. The couple had one daughter, Elizabeth Zane Thomas (Smith). He lived to the age of 90 and died in Franklin County on February 16, 1982.
