HISTORICAL SKETCH OF THE COLLECTION
Anson G. McCook was born in Steubenville, Ohio on October 10, 1835, the second son of Dr.
John and Catharine Julia (Sheldon) McCook. He attended school in New Lisbon, Ohio from
1840-1854, when he went to California to mine for gold. In 1859 he returned to Steubenville
and studied law in the office of his cousin, George Wythe McCook. With the news of the
bombing of Ft. Sumter in 1861, he helped raise the first company in eastern Ohio, with the
Second Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He and his four brothers, his father, an uncle, and eight
cousins served in the Civil War and were known as the “fighting McCooks of Ohio.” Anson
McCook was commissioned as captain and was promoted to Colonel of the 2nd O.V.I. After
mustering out with his regiment in 1864, he rejoined the Army as colonel of the 194th O.V.I. This
unit performed guard duty in the Virginia valley until mustering out in October 1865.
He served as a U.S. assessor of internal revenue in Steubenville until moving to New York in
1873. From 1877-1883 he served as a republican representative to the U.S. Congress; was
Secretary of the U.S. Senate from 1884-1893; and city chamberlain of New York from 1894-
1897. He married Hettie B. McCook in June, 1886.
